As lives have been hurt and/or lost due to the disbelief that an African-American woman is a practicing doctor, the Greensboro Medical Society (GMS) would like to actively combat the stereotype that African-American women are not doctors. The GMS Women’s Doctor Day is designed to inspire and encourage female elementary students through exposure to pursue a healthcare profession. The Doctor’s Day program allows minority female doctors from across the greater Greensboro community to visit Wiley Elementary School on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 and expose the young girls their successful adult counterparts. Our goal is for the doctors to sow the seeds of interest that will eventually reap a harvest of increased numbers of minority healthcare providers. African Americans, Hispanic Americas and Native Americans make up nearly a quarter of the U.S. population today and are expected to make up a third of the population within 30 years—but only 7 percent of physicians and 6 percent of medical school faculty members are from one of these underrepresented groups. Increasing the number of underrepresented minority healthcare professionals is key to improving health care delivery and to eliminating persistent racial and ethnic health disparities in America. The Greensboro Medical Society believes students from underrepresented groups need to meet, not only hear about, real-life African American female doctors of many areas in healthcare who can share stories about their own experiences and perhaps inspire these students to follow the same path.
